WHAT IS BRUXISM

Bruxism is a neuromuscular problem, very common in the population, which consists of an involuntary habit of contraction of the jaw muscles and grinding of the dental structures, especially at night, although it can also occur during the day.

The frequent and permanent contraction of the muscles generates alterations in the jaw and overstimulation of the nervous structures of the head area.

Among some symptoms it can cause headaches (headache), neck pain (neck pain), ear pain, shoulder pain, pain and inflammation in the muscles and jaw joint (TMJ), and dental hypersensitivity, and may even fracture any part as a result of that wear.

Stress is the main cause of bruxism, although there are other factors that can increase symptoms, such as poor eating habits, lack of rest and sleep, or emotional problems of various kinds.

There are various treatments and exercises that can be used to treat bruxism: joint mobilization exercises, stretching, massage of the involved muscles (intracavitary and superficial), trigger point treatments, dry needling, myofascial induction, muscle chain work the head and neck, proprioception exercises and postural re-education.

The improvement is usually progressive, achieving positive effects if regular treatment is followed.
